Tourism Leaders Partner to Restore Forest and Promote Sustainability

SKAL Nairobi, in celebration of the 89th Skal World Day, partnered with Karura Forest to launch a tree planting initiative aimed at restoring the forest through tree growing. The tree-growing process involved site preparation, production of quality seedlings, and 3-year aftercare maintenance.

On Wednesday, 26th April, Skal Nairobi members took part in a tree-planting event at Karura Forest. The event was presided by Skal Kenya Nairobi President, Liz Tapawa, and Skal National President, Shenaz Neky and attended by Nairobi executive committee members Gabriel Maroa, Umberta Daniel, Rose Gatanyu, Nev Jiwani, and other Skalleagues.

During the event, Skal Nairobi planted over 80 trees, including some planted in memory of departed Skalleagues – RIP, Bela Sharma, Mr. Giga, and Mr. Waris. The initiative is an ongoing activity aimed at minimizing the unfavourable effects of climate change and enhancing awareness about the environment among Skal Nairobi’s membership, partners, and supporters.

“As we celebrate the 89th Skal World Day, it is important that we take the necessary steps to preserve our environment,” said the Skal Kenya Nairobi President. “We are committed to being part of the solution by supporting initiatives such as the Karura Forest tree growing program.”

INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF TRAVEL & TOURISM PROFESSIONALS KENYA CHAPTER

We are the Kenya chapter of a professional organization of tourism leaders, promoting global tourism and friendship. It is the only international group uniting all branches of the travel and tourism industry. Its members, the industry’s managers and executives meet at local, national, regional and international levels to discuss and pursue topics of common interest. The first Club was founded in 1932 in Paris by travel managers, following an educational tour of Scandinavia. The idea of international goodwill and friendship grew and, in 1934, the “Association Internationale des Skal Clubs” was formed with Florimond Volckaert as its first President, who is considered the “Father of Skal”. In Kenya, the first club was founded in XYZ. Skal International today has approximately 15,000 members in 400 Clubs throughout 80 nations. Most activities occur at the local level, moving up through National Committees, under the umbrella of Skal International, headquartered at the General Secretariat in Torremolinos, Spain. The Kenya chapter boasts of 123 members in Nairobi and 456 members at the Coast. Skal International is governed by an Executive Committee of six members, elected by delegates to an annual General Assembly, held during the World Congress, hosted by a different country each year. This allows members first-hand observation of the travel and tourism potential around the world.
