Cultural Tours To Western Kenya

TEKWA’s tour to Western Kenya takes you through rolling tea plantations (Kericho), equatorial forests (Kakamega Forest), along the shores of the largest lake in Africa (Lake Victoria) and to the home of Barack Obama’s family (Alego/Kogelo). You also get a chance to interact with different ethnic groups, some of them of Bantu origin like the Luhya, others of Nilotic background like the Luo, the Kalenjin and the Teso.

You will visit Thimlich Ohinga, a most impressive 15th century stone settlement, a smaller version of the ruins of Great Zimbabwe, which has acquired the status of UNESCO World Heritage Site only this year. A visit to Alego/Kogelo will take you to the Dr Auma Obama Foundation, where you will participate in the activities of the Sauti Kuu (Strong Voices) family. Due to excellent development of road infrastructure in recent years, travelling has become easy and you can get accommodation in good 3 – 4 star hotels. You will be accompanied by a professional tour guide who is specialized in African and Kenyan History. She has travelled through Kenya since the 1990s and she speaks English, German, French and Spanish.

Cultural Tours To Northern Kenya The Cradle Of Mankind (East Turkana)

Most of Northern Kenya is arid country, scorched and roasting under the equatorial sun and it can go for months without rain. The mountains that rise from the deserts are however, often luxuriantly forested. Safaris in Northern Kenya tend to use these areas as more comfortable oasis refuge away from the shadeless plains. You will get in touch with people still following their traditions as pastoralists, fishermen or hunters and gatherers. Infrastructure is often poor, thus we use a Mercedes truck which is well equiped for the rough terrain. You will drive along the largest desert lake in the world (Lake Turkana), cross a salt desert (Chalbi desert), as well as stone and sand deserts and endless plains. To top this, you will move through that very same area where 3 million years ago our ancestors roamed around, namely the “Cradle of Mankind”. Where available you will stay in 3 to 4 star lodges otherwise in simple but always clean bandas. No camping! If not in lodges our cook will take care of your meals. He will surprise you with his cooking skills even under not very favourable conditions. We have a professional tour guide specialized in African and Kenyan History. She has traveled to the North since the early 1990s and speaks English, German, French and Spanish.
